Created Sep. 02 1999 Updated Oct. 16 2001 Document created by S.Chekanov (chekanov@mail.desy.de) This document can be found in: http://www.desy.de/~chekanov/bpres.html (What to do When) What to do When for BPRES ################################### (if the experts are unreachable) #################################### Generally, problems with BPRES are difficult to fix for non-experts, so contact imidiatly the experts if something goes wrong. However, if the problem is related to DQM Browser, it can be fixed by the shift crew: ---------------------------- BPRES Messages on DQM Browser ----------------------------- If you see that something goes wrong with BPRES on DQM Browser, first of all go to the BPRES DQM home page: http://www.desy.de/~chekanov/bpres/bpres_report.html and check BPRES histograms. BPRES Histograms should be filled and time on html home page should be correct (+/- 30 min). Note that histograms might be not filled if you do not take data or you have started a new run (<20 min). 1) If you see yellow BPRES box "TLT BPRES histograms are not available" on DQM Browser, this is not a serious problem. This happens if the previous run was not successful and TLT histograms are not filled for that run. This message will disappear after some time (most likely for the next run). 2) If BPRES DQM is not updated, then, most likely, BPRES DQM process has stopped. Check http://www-cdaq.desy.de/~bpres/ The date on this page most likely was not updated for some time (the date should be in range +/- 30 min). To restart DQM, do the following: a) login on "contlt" user name : "shiftcrew" password : "... _ ..._..." c) ps -u shiftcrew This gives you list of the active processes. There should be two BPRES processes: 1) bpres.sle 2) sleep If you do not see them, you need to restart BPRES DQM. Do the following on "contlt" computer: 1) cd 2) cd bpres 3) cd dqm 4) run_dqm 5) logout Check http://www-cdaq.desy.de/~bpres/ The date on this page should be OK. To check the BPRES status, go to http://www-cdaq.desy.de/~bpres/dqm/bpres.dqm You will see the current status. 3) If you see RED BPRES box on DQM and message like ".. too low signals", do the following: 1) Go To http://www-cdaq.desy.de/~bpres/ 2) Check histograms. If you see that there are some random non-filled channels (in total -416 channels), then this is most likely related to the quality of the data taking. Send an email to BPRES experts. If you will see very big holes with empty channels (>100), call to experts and send email. This is a serious problem. ------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------------------------------- ------------------- HV RELATED PROBLEMS ------------------- How To Set HV for BPRES PMTs ---------------------------- For example, if the power is OFF in the hall, experts should set the HV on PMT. However, if there is no any hope to find experts in the near future, try to set the HV yourself. 1. How to set the HV on (if everything is OFF) ---------------------------------------------- a) Make sure that the low voltage on the 6th floor is ON. Look at "hc3control", user: public and then print "sh_b_hv". You should see that the voltage on units 21,22,23,24 should be on. These units are usually always on since they are used for BCAL. b) Now you can set the HV on the BPRES. Go to Ruckzack (2 floor) and find B2 04 and B2 05 Racks. Turn the CAMAC crate ON (if it is OFF). The crate is on if you will see an yellow light above the CAMAC switch). Then switch the PC on (bottom "power" on PC and a bottom on the monitor). You will be asked to push any bottom and to print the password ("ZEUS"). c) Go to "Program Manager - [ZEUS]" (2 clicks on the icon). Go to "File Manager" (2 clicks on the icon). Go to C:\OODA\SETDAC directory (2 clicks). There are 6 exe files there: dac11.exe, dac13.exe, dac2.exe, dac20.exe dac22.exe, dac4.exe. d) Click 2 times on "dac11.exe". You will be asked "Is HV on ?". Say "No". You will get a window with HV set for each individual PMT. Click on "Set ON" and wait for 5 sec. Then "Exit". Do the same with each exe file: from "dac13.exe" to "dac4.exe". At the end, you will set all HV. f) You should be sure that you REALLY set the HV on PMTs. For this, go to C:\OODA\WW_READ using "File Manager". There are 6 exe files: from "ww1.exe" to "ww6.exe". Click 2 times on "ww1.exe". You will be asked: "Is HV on". Now you should say "Yes". Then you will get a big window. Press a bottom "Read MUX" and wait for 5 sec. You will see the numbers which are read-back from PMTs. They should be around 1000 Volts (+/-200, for a particular gain and calibrations) Do the same with each exe file, from ww2.exe to ww6.exe (in order !!). At the end, the program will make a fresh file "date".d you can look at it. 2. How to set the HV off (before the access!) --------------------------------------------- You should remember that it is very bad if the power on 6 floor is off, but PC from Ruckzack still sets the HV. Before switching the low voltage from 6 floor, switch the HV off ! a) Go to Ruckzack (2 floor) and find B2 04 and B2 05 racks. Find BPRES PC b) Go to "Program Manager - [ZEUS]" (2 clicks on the icon). Go to "File Manager" (2 clicks on the icon). Go to C:\OODA\SETDAC directory (2 clicks) There will be 6 exe files there: dac11.exe, dac13.exe, dac2.exe, dac20.exe dac22.exe, dac4.exe. c) Click 2 times on "dac11.exe". You will be asked "Is HV on". Say "Yes". You will get a window with the HV settings. Click on "Set off" and wait for 5 sec. Then "Exit". Then do the same with each exe file: dac13.exe - dac4.exe. At the end, you will set all HV. d) You should be sure that you indeed set the HV on PMTs. For this, go to C:\OODA\WW_READ using "File Manager". There are 6 exe files: "ww1.exe" .. "ww6.exe". Click 2 times on "ww1.exe". You will be asked: "Is HV on". Now you should say "Yes". Then you will get a window. Press a bottom "Read MUX" and wait for 5 sec. You will see numbers which are read-back from PMTs. Do the same with each exe file, from ww2.exe to ww6.exe (in order !!). At the end, the program will make a fresh file "date".d you can look at it. The HV should be < 50 Volts. 3. In case if DESY lost power ------------------------------ Of course, in this case Ruckzack will go off. In this case you have to switch on B2 04 and B2 05 racks, and do everything as described in '1. How to set the HV on'
