Structure Functions and Exotics

The Structure Functions and Exotics group measures the charged and neutral current deep inelastic scattering (DIS) cross sections at high values of Q2 and the longitudinal structure function. These cross sections allow the determination of the proton structure functions. The measurements are also used to study QCD and the electroweak sector of the Standard Model. In addition physics beyond the Standard Model is investigated. New particles such as leptoquarks, supersymmetric quarks or excited leptons etc. are searched for, using the highest-energy ep collisions at HERA. Also possible sub-structure of quarks is explored using the DIS processes at very high Q2.

QCD and Hadronic Final States

The QCD group studies hard QCD processes, which usually give rise to the production of high energy jets. The entire range of Q^2 values at HERA from zero (photoproduction) to very high (DIS) is covered. Many papers have focused on detailed QCD dynamics as well as the hadronic properties of the photon.

Heavy Flavour Physics

The Heavy Flavour Group focuses on the production of charm and beauty quarks at HERA. The processes by which these heavy quarks are produced give fundamental insights into QCD and the structure of the proton and photon. We measure charm and beauty cross-sections over a wide range of x and Q2 using heavy mesons (particles that contain heavy quarks) or leptons (such as electrons and muons) from the weak decay of the heavy quark.

Diffraction and Vector Mesons
The group has been integrated into the QCD and Heavy Flavour Groups

In classical physics, diffraction is the process whereby a wave changes its spatial profile when encountering the edge of an obstacle. A very similar thing occurs in high energy ep collisions at HERA. A virtual photon (here the wave) changes its nature as it travels through the field of the proton (here the obstacle). The photon transforms into a different state through the strong interaction, which is described by QCD. A wide variety of studies were carried out: a special way to test QCD.
