Research Associate for Particle Physics
(EPS/91275)
The Particle Physics Group at the University of Manchester invites
applications for a Research Associate to work on the D0 experiment at the Fermilab
Tevatron. This STFC funded RA position is available immediately, initially for one
year. The extension by a second year depends on further funding being granted by
STFC. The RA position has been awarded to collaborate with Prof Soldner-Rembold
during his term as Dzero Spokesperson.
Among other projects, the Manchester D0 group is playing important roles
in searches for Standard Model and SUSY Higgs bosons, as well as top quark
and electroweak measurements. We also currently provide conveners for the
Higgs group, the Top group and the EMID group as well as the D0 Spokesperson.
The successful candidate will be expected to play a leading role in physics
analysis and will contribute at an appropriate level to the operation of
the detector. Ideally, the successful candidate would be based permanently at
Fermilab, in which case an additional overseas cost of living allowance
would be paid. Alternatively, regular travel to the experiment would be
required. Allowances: A successful candidate based permanently at Fermilab would
receive additional Long Term Attachment (LTA) and/or Nightly Subsistance Allowance
(NSA) towards the cost of overseas living. LTA and NSA to be advised on
appointment.
Knowledge of and experience in Particle Physics are essential.
Starting salary will be £28,839 p.a.

Job Description
Job Title: Research Associate

Overall Purpose of the Job :
As part of the D0 project, funded by STFC to support Professor Soldner-
Rembolds role as D0 Spokesperson, the post holder will work on data
analysis and support the operation of the experiment. This will be done under
supervision of Professor Soldner-Rembold. In close collaboration with the
international partners, she/he will also participate in all aspects of the
experiment, including the scientific exploitation of the data for a
variety of physical questions.
Key Responsibilities, Accountabilities or Duties :
Participation in the data analysis and interpretation
Supervision of PhD students working on the project
Presentation of work and results at international conferences and events
Report on the adopted techniques and the results obtained at
international conferences and in peer-reviewed journals
The post holder will be expected to work at Fermilab, Chicago (USA) and on
the campus of the University of Manchester
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience :
A PhD in Particle Physics
Extensive knowledge of and experience in data analysis techniques
Programming skills (e.g. C++, Python, Fortran)
Excellent communication skills, including written and presentation skills
Willingness to travel within UK and overseas
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Experience :
Experience in Collider Physics (Tevatron, LHC, HERA, BaBar/Belle or similar)
Knowledge of and experience in advanced analysis techniques
FURTHER INFORMATION
The Manchester Particle Physics group has more than 100 members, and is
active in many areas of Physics Research (both theoretical and experimental),
Detector Development and e-Science. We participate in D0, ATLAS, LHCb, SuperNemo
and BABAR. We have world-leading expertise in Phenomenology at high-energy
colliders, in Quantum Chromodynamics, Neutrino and Higgs Physics, CP
violation, Supersymmetry and String Phenomenology, and in the Physics of the Early
Universe. We are part of the Cockcroft Institute and work on the LHC, the
ILC and CLIC, and HIE-Isolde. We lead the project to construct EMMA, the
world's first non-scaling FFAG.
