Matthew Forrest - Official ZEUS page
This is the official ZEUS web page of Matthew Forrest, former student on ZEUS for the University of Glasgow. Here you can find links to, and details of, the various things I worked with/on during my time with ZEUS.
I have now graduated (in July 2010) and am investigating where I want to work next.

At ZEUS we study particle physics, more precisely the collisions of electrons and protons produced at the HERA accelerator in the DESY laboratory in Hamburg, Germany. If you want to know more go ask Brian Cox but phrases like 'nature of matter' or 'fundamental laws of the universe' might be involved.
For those in the know, my area of expertise is the study of isolated photons in deep inelastic scattering and during the course of my Ph.D. studies we published the first ZEUS isolated photon results from HERA II data. To improve this measurment I spent a significant amount of time tuning the ZEUS computer simulation of electromagnetic showering in the ZEUS electromagnetic calorimeter. I worked as part of the QCD group and as the QCD group Monte Carlo Contact Person I was responsible for processing and documenting all the Monte Carlo used by the group. The public links belows provide access to my papers, Ph.D. thesis, the QCD group homepage and MC page and all the papers in which I am listed as an author.

For more specific details of my work please see the detailed work logs of the isolated photon analysis and shower shape tuning below. Unfortunately because of the sensitive nature of the secrets of the universe, access is restricted to those lucky people who know the top secret ZEUS password. Much of the relevant information is in the public domain and can be found in my Ph.D. thesis linked above.

Personal Interests
When not doing science I enjoy various other activities. I love music and my absolute favourite pastime is playing drums and percussion in a band of like-minded individuals. I enjoy playing football and, to a lesser extent, watching football. I freely confess that I enjoy tinkering with computers despite all the frustration that it brings. Games of chance and skills are guaranteed to bring out my competitive streak, in particular I like to play Go, Risk, Poker and other card games.
I also enjoy the great outdoors and have a casual interests in skiing, sailing, walking and camping. But above all I am a social animal and enjoy the company of interesting people and experiencing different cultures. Recently I have discovered that you can have a surprising amount of fun by striking up conversations with strangers on public transport.
